Respawn Entertainment’s and EA’s Apex Legends is a first-person shooter set in the newly-branded Apex Universe, formerly Titanfall universe, set eighteen years after the events of Titanfall 2. The battle royale game offers multiple modes with hero-base gameplay on ever-shrinking maps. Currently, Apex Legends has a total of 22 different Legends, each with their special abilities and ultimate powers.

Many multiplayer shooters, and battle royale games, in particular, have struggled with audio issues, and Apex Legends is not an exception. The game has amazing sound effects, and more have been added as the game has included more advanced Legends and complex maps with interactive elements. However, this has affected the playability of the game, especially in close quarters. According to a Reddit user known as almay9, removing friendly footsteps from Apex Legends might be worth thinking about for Respawn.
While Apex Legends has suffered from specific audio-related bugs throughout the years, the Reddit thread just talks about the confusing message footsteps audio sends in general. It doesn’t seem to have consistency in terms of distance, or sometimes even direction. Usually, when a player hears a footstep, they need to figure out whether that was a friend or a foe. Quickly glancing at the minimap is a good way to determine whether there’s a teammate looting in that direction or not. However, if the suggested distance or direction is off, players can easily get surprised, which in low TTK (time-to-kill) games usually doesn’t end well.
While footsteps are perhaps the most consequential audio issues Apex Legends has dealt with, it’s certainly not only those that have annoyed players. When Respawn introduced a new Heat Shield item to the game, an audio bug allowed Apex Legends players to spam a “whoosh” sound to other players. While this was fixed fairly quickly, these types of issues have continued to happen.
Even the popular YouTube streamer Dr Disrespect criticized Apex Legends for its audio issues recently. However, Respawn shouldn’t consider this a lost battle by any means. The game is still enjoyed by many gamers, and some simple fixes, as the one Redditors suggested here, could make gameplay much more enjoyable and less frustrating.
Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
