In a tweet from February 4, Rodney Reece, Principal Designer for Apex Legends, unveiled some disappointing news for fans. According to the developer, it was his last day at Respawn Entertainment. In addition to announcing his departure from the company, he cited the support of the community over the years. “You were always in my mind and made me work harder,” Reece said in reference to gamers playing the battle royale. While he was leaving the company, the developer revealed that he looked forward to still being a fan.

In addition to Reece, it was revealed that Dave Osei, Lead Level Designer on Apex Legends, was departing from Respawn Entertainment. This news came via February 4 tweet from the developer where he announced that it was his last day at the company as well. While working on the battle royale, Osei managed to accomplish a lot, eventually being promoted from Senior Level Designer to Lead Level Designer. In the message from the developer, he noted that he was proud of what he worked on at the company. In addition, he thanked Respawn and the millions of gamers that play Apex Legends.
The departure of these developers is significant news for Apex Legends, as both Reece and Osei left an indelible impact on the battle royale. Reece played a pivotal role in designing both the World’s Edge and Storm Point maps, while Osei worked on creating the Olympus map first seen in Season 7. While developer departures are nothing new in the game industry as individuals often decide to pursue different creative avenues, it is nonetheless intriguing to see a couple of high-profile employees leave so close together. Fortunately, according to the developers, work on Season 12 has already been completed meaning that the absence should not impact the launch of the new seasonal content.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Respawn Entertainment moving forward. In addition, it will be exciting to find out what other projects Osei and Reece become a part of in the coming months. If their previous work on Apex Legends is anything to go by, it is likely to be impressive.
Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
