Crafting metals in Apex Legends are used to unlock customization options, like new skins, banners, and finishers. However, players won’t actually get any crafting metals from exploring the battle royale map or anything like that. Instead, Apex Legends players will get crafting metals by opening loot boxes.
In Apex Legends, loot boxes are referred to as Apex Packs, and they are earned in-game by leveling up. Alternatively, players can purchase Apex Packs using the game’s microtransaction system if they are willing to dole out some of their real-world cash for the chance to get crafting metals.
Due to the nature of loot boxes, Apex Legends players aren’t guaranteed crafting metals whenever they buy and open an Apex Pack. This means that there is no surefire, guaranteed way to get crafting metals in Apex Legends, but rather, players just have to get lucky when opening their loot boxes.
Since Apex Legends is a free-to-play game, it seems like it will be able to avoid getting too much criticism for its use of loot boxes. The fact that the loot boxes offer only cosmetic rewards also plays into the battle royale title’s favor, as titles that have offered in-game advantages in loot boxes, like EA’s own Star Wars Battlefront 2, have been harshly criticized.
In the meantime, it’s possible that Respawn will add other ways to get crafting metals in Apex Legends at some point in the future. After all, Respawn plans to aggressively support Apex Legends with regular content updates moving forward, which could include the addition of cross-play as well as new playable Legends, so new, more straightforward methods of farming crafting metals aren’t out of the question.
Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
