During a recent MTV New interview, Anya Taylor-Joy was asked if she was a video game kid, to which the actress stated she wasn’t a gamer until she confirmed her role as Princess Peach in the The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The first Super Mario Bros. game was released way back in 1985, and since then it has turned millions of people into gamers, which is a trend that seems to continue today with Taylor-Joy and many more. Over the years, Mario has bridged the gap from platforming titles to other genres like kart racing, mini-games, sports, painting, and more, with Mario Kart being a key draw for Taylor-Joy.

According to her, she started her Super Mario Bros. gaming journey with the Mario Kart franchise by buying all of “the Mario Kart world,” which could be all the nine home releases or may reference Mario Kart Tour which is a mobile game that features locations based on the real world. As she prefers to go to the movie theater rather than watch films at home, Taylor-Joy stated that she’d rather play games at the arcade than anywhere else. Before being signed onto The Super Mario Bros. Movie, she wasn’t much of a gamer, but now she considers herself a “hardcore adult arcade individual” which may point to just how much time the actress and her friends have spent at the arcade.
Although her preferred method of playing games is at the arcade, Anya Taylor-Joy may have a hard time finding arcades in different places around the world while touring for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Beyond her move toward gaming, Taylor-Joy has created a Princess Peach outfit for Halloween which she also expresses her interest in wearing for the promotions for the film during the MTV interview. While there are other known gamers among the Super Mario Bros. Movie cast like Jack Black and Seth Rogen, it’s currently unclear just how many of them have played the games or if director Aaron Horvath has encouraged the research or not.
As some Super Mario Bros. fans referenced different points of the interview, many others expressed their enthusiasm for Anya Taylor-Joy’s role as Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The excitement from Taylor-Joy’s friends for playing Peach is reflected by several Nintendo fans who have also pointed to casting like Charlie Day and Jack Black as other positive choices.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie premieres in theaters on April 7, 2023.
